A Town Full of Harmony and Christmas Joy

Welcome to Elkhorn, Wisconsin!

Elkhorn, Wisconsin, the pride of Walworth County, is one of the most livable small towns in America. The City thrives as a small, traditional, Wisconsin "home town" - with tree-lined streets, beautiful historical homes, and an established downtown. It is a place in which to grow up, raise a family and retire in the context of a caring, living community that has consistently exhibited excellence in education, recreation, health care, and civic activity. Its satisfied residents, which numbered around 7,500 in the 2000 census, enjoy the simple yet involved lifestyle that Elkhorn affords.

In the early 1800s Colonel Samuel Phoenix spotted a rack of elk antlers caught in a tree and proclaimed the semi-forested area as “Elk Horn.” Not long afterwards, the area’s pristine beauty and fertile soils drew the attention of LeGrand Rockwell, Hollis Latham and Horace Coleman, who had come from Milwaukee in the 1830s in search of a likely site on which to found a village. The area had already been crossed by an army trail and surveyed a year earlier and, being situated on a natural watershed, this seemed an ideal spot. The three began setting up housekeeping in a tent within a poplar grove erected about a mile east from the center stake. They then immediately filed claims and set about clearing the land for the future village. By 1846 when the first town meeting was held, Elkhorn had boasted a population of 539.

Located in the center of Walworth County, Elkhorn was designated as the County seat when the county was established by the State of Wisconsin in 1846. As the County seat, Elkhorn serves as the host community for governance and justice, financial and service organizations, and facilities and events.

A beautiful park surrounds the County Government Center, a focal point for the Elkhorn downtown, where families gathered to say goodbye to their soldiers during World War II. Later the park became the setting for unique Christmas decorations, transforming downtown Elkhorn into a Christmas card cover scene. That setting eventually gained Elkhorn a delightful reputation as the “Christmas Card Town," a reputation artistically recognized every year through a series of oil paintings created by resident artists depicting the City’s historical landmarks. It is a reputation that has not only spread coast to coast, but is responsible for bringing in growing numbers of visitors every Yuletide season.

That festive scene went national when, in 1952, a popular television series chose Elkhorn as the setting for a program depicting a small American town during the Christmas season. The show was seen by millions of viewers nationwide and was rerun for years. When, in 1958, New York artist Cecile Johnson was commissioned by the Ford Motor Company to create a series of six watercolor paintings to illustrate an article for their magazine, the “Ford Times,” Elkhorn, Wisconsin was chosen as the stage. Five of her six paintings were later published and sold as Christmas cards and her Dickensian images subsequently found their way into the homes of virtually every corner of the world. From then on, for people across the globe, the streets of Elkhorn, Wisconsin became the symbol of Christmas. The tradition continues today, through the artistic talents of Jan Castle Reed and the sponsorship of the Elkhorn Area Chamber of Commerce. (Five of the original six paintings are currently on display at Elkhorn City Hall for all to view and enjoy).

Today, Elkhorn continues to capitalize on its historical heritage. The Walworth County Fair, held in Elkhorn annually since 1851, is considered to be among the finest in the nation, attracting over 100,000 enthusiastic residents, friends and visitors every summer. Downtown businesses are encouraged through a City grant program to restore their facades to be reminiscent of the early years. Elkhorn’s motto, “Living in Harmony” reflects its traditional “home town” values and the community’s musical heritage.
