Welcome to Fontana, Wisconsin!
Situated on the west end of beautiful Geneva Lake with a background of tree-covered, glacier-formed hills, the Village of Fontana, Wisconsin is a lovely and welcoming Walworth County community in the southeastern part of the state. The earliest record of white men seeing this beautiful expanse of water was a party traveling with the Kinzie family between their army post at Fort Dearborn (Chicago) and Fort Winnebago (Portage City) near the Fox and Wisconsin River portage in 1831. This area was not on the river and lake highways of the earlier frontier period and thus lay undiscovered.
Shaw-nee-aw-kee is the Potawatomi Indian word for "friend" and was likely the salutation given the John Kinzie party at the first visit of any white person to the village of Chief Big Foot. This is the site of today's Fontana. As in the time of the Potawatomi, Fontana is still "the friendly village," with a myriad of opportunities for livelihood, boundless family and retirement activities and a life surrounded by nature's quiet beauty.
Fontana is home to one of the area's finest resorts, The Abbey Resort and Fontana Spa, as well as a taste of heaven for fishermen and water sports lovers. The village and its surrounding area is enriched with three churches, an excellent school system, a comfortable library, and is home to the Geneva Lake West Chamber of Commerce. There are plentiful parks for relaxing or playing and a beautiful sand beach. There are also many small shops where shopkeepers are eager to assist you in choosing just the right accoutrements for your home or gifts for your friends and family.
