Williams Bay WI

Out of this World Sights and Satisfaction

Williams Bay, Wisconsin is a charming and scenic bayside village located on the west shores of Geneva Lake in Walworth County. Visitors to Walworth County are pleasantly surprised by all the lakeside amenities when they arrive at “the Bay,” at the intersection of Highway 67 and Geneva Street, just a few miles from downtown Lake Geneva. The beauty and diversity of the communities on the western shore of Geneva Lake provide residents and tourists with the best America has to offer.

Owing to its location along one of the finest lakes in the state and its award winning lakefront development, Williams Bay is an attractive summer resort. It is the home of Yerkes Observatory, known as the "birthplace of astrophysics" and site of the world's largest refracting telescope. Gage Marine, which runs the excursion boats on Geneva Lake, is headquartered here - as is Aurora University, a full service educational conference center offering challenge courses, environmental programs, and year-round lakeside recreation.

Owned, operated and staffed by the Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics of the University of Chicago, the Yerkes Observatory, built in 1895-97, has been a popular attraction for visitors to the Geneva Lake area for nearly 100 years. Yerkes houses the world's largest refracting telescope, containing a 40-inch lens. There are five telescopes at Yerkes Observatory, which is part of a consortium that also operates a 3.5-meter telescope in New Mexico. Today the 77-acre, park-like site in southeast Wisconsin provides laboratory space and access to telescopes for research and instruction. Current research includes the interstellar medium, globular cluster formation, infrared astronomy, and near-Earth objects. Additionally, the University of Chicago maintains a sizable engineering center in the observatory, dedicated to making and maintaining scientific instruments.

Architect Henry Ives Cobb, known for his flamboyant style, designed the dome and connecting building. Free tours are held every Saturday year-round at 10 A.M., 11 A.M., and noon. Visitors are welcome to walk around the building exterior to enjoy the variety of symbolic and sometimes whimsical sculptures. Inside, green marble walls and oak trim set off elaborate geometric designs and figures within the central rotunda.
In the summer, Williams Bay grows to nearly double its population with tourists ready to enjoy swimming, boating, fishing and leisure walks around the lake. Winter brings ice boating, ice fishing, and snowmobiling to "the Bay," helping to create a village for all seasons. Still Williams Bay residents and homeowners delight in the fact that the sights, sounds, views and vistas of Williams Bay are theirs to enjoy all year 'round.
